PRONUNCIATION: HAW-rah boh-yer-EHS-kuh
 
TRANSLATION: Boyar's dance
 
SOURCE: Sunni Bloland learned this dance during her 1967-68 research trip to Romania from Anca Guirchescu, dance ethnographer at the Institute of Ethnography and Folklore in Bucareşti (Bucharest). Ms. Bloland introduced the dance to folk dancers in the United States at the 1969 Balkan/Near-East Festival in Portland, Oregon.
 
BACKGROUND: A boyer (boier) is a nobleman or gentleman farmer, one of a privileged class in Romania. Hora Boerească (Boiereasca) is from the small village of Răzmizeşti, about 10 miles northeast of Alexandria toward Bucareşti (Bucharest) in southeastern Romania. The music, recorded in the village of Răzmizeşti, is played by the local musicians.
